The Case of the Dreaded Hotel Jogging Map

There it was, sitting on the desk and openly taunting us. Would we dare read it or could we pretend we never even noticed it in the first place? The Hotel Palomar Philadelphia's city jogging map threatened to make us feel guilty about taking a long weekend away from New York City and all the subway stair-climbing life in NYC entails.

Instead of in the back pocket of our workout pants, the map landed in a shuffled stack of torn-off hotel notepad paper on which we had jotted our impressions of Philly cheesesteaks from around the city, but we had not forgotten about it.

While it's awfully thoughtful of a hotel to provide such a small amenity as a running map (or a larger version, like the Hotel Palomar Chicago's running concierge), we've got to wonder what sort of guests actually make use of them?

Our most strenuous hotel exercise is typically a lap around the pool or some Wii Fit-inspired yoga thanks to limited time and the lack of desire to deal with sweaty running clothes and shoes, but we'd like to be the sort of person that picks up this map and (pun intended) runs with it.

What do you think? Do you think more hotels should jump on the jogging map wagon? Tell us your thoughts in comments below!

Hotel Running Maps

The Charles Hotel is proud to provide our guests with running maps designed by four-time Boston Marathon Winner, Bill Rodgers.

The maps take runners along The Charles River with five different routes that vary in distance from 1.3 miles to 8.6 miles.

These pocket sized maps also provide running tips and a personal message from Rodgers.

The maps were launched nearly ten years ago and continue to be a popular guest amenity.

Great idea!

In response to the comment above asking who the guests that would use if these maps would be, well, I am one of them.  I think this is an EXCELLENT idea and it would be great if more hotels would adopt it as sometimes it's hard to find a safe runnng route when you are visiting a new city.  I am one of those who runs wherever I go and I think this is fantastic.

Why not

In our hotel we have many clients who are having a run in the morning or evening - mostly business clients who only have a limited amount of time. Since we have been asked several times for information, we think it is a good service to provide them with a running map. So they can avoid most streets and jog in the park and know how to come back to the hotel not using the same itinerary to go back.
