What's Your Favorite Thing to Plunder From the Minibar?

August 11, 2010 at 9:31 AM | by | Comments (4)

Currently, Mr. W over on Facebook for the W London Leicester Square is collecting ideas for the munchie boxes aka minibars which will be in the guestrooms when the joint finally opens in February.

But the responses to his question had us wondering---what's your pleasure when it comes to the minibar? What are you willing to dole out some extra cash for just to have a snack in the comfort of your own room? Or, what treat is totally worth the 100 percent mark-up?

Do you like standard candy and chips offerings like Pringles and Snickers found in the chain hotels? Or will you splurge for gourmet gummi bears like we recently did at the Affinia Chicago? While we were tickled to see NY-based Dean and DeLuca treats in the new Thompson Toronto, instead we devoured some Crunchy Croquant Cheetos. Go figure.

Perhaps you'd like a refreshing beverage instead. Various hotels stock different brands of bottled water but the The Hotel Palomar offers medium-sized bottles of wine in their suites while The Sanctum Soho gives you a full bottle of Jack Daniels. Maybe you'd cough up extra cash for practical items like the disposable cameras and suntan lotion we found at The Cove at Atlantis, or even the make-up kits like the ones we saw at Cooper Square. Then again, you might prefer a limited fashion item from the minibar like the Ace Palm Springs flip-flops.

And how can we forget the sex kits? But the question is--are you the type to splurge for a full-on sex kits with sex or would you just settle for a packet of condoms?

What's your minibar fantasy? Standard, gourmet, practical, alcoholic, beautifying or sexy? Let us know in comments below!

Minibar goodies

I didn't know Preserve made razors - I love their toothbrushes!

Usually my minibar purchases are along the lines of "I really need a [drink/candy bar/drink] and don't feel like [getting dressed/standing up/leaving the room] to get it."  But I'm open-minded to unusual, cool stuff.

The ideal minibar item is something that:

  1. You need, but didn't realize you needed, or is way better than the one you brought with you;

  2. You want to take it home with you and you'll continue to use it; and

  3. It's got the hotel's name on it, and not just with a cheap sticker. Oh, and -

  4. it can't be something that you'd expect the front desk at a Holiday Inn Express to give you for free.

For me, if there was a really nice hotel logo coffee mug for under $20, I'd probably grab it.

i agree

i like to see limited edition items in the minibar a la the Ace Hotel's flipflops. but usually, i end up busting it open for a $4 snickers. I mean, i know i could have gotten it at the airport for less but i see it and then i got to have it. #minibarfail

my must-haves

I love Kimpton for their 2 free Minibar items if you're an InTouch member. I always grab the green tea for a refresh. Once I got the Standard Hollywood's flip flops and never wore them and I totally needed a $5 at The James to wash down some Chicago pizza.

must have!

totally agree with Mike (first comment), and on the same line of thought, they could offer an anti-hangover drink. After you had enjoyed the party and go back to your room, nothing better than drinking a fell better drink to wake up new the day after!
