When this charming, woolled-up young gent greeted us at the door of The James New York last week, we thought of the only logical question to ask: What the Dickens is going on here? It's the middle of summer, and oh, by the way, it's also 2010.

We were not surprised at all to learn that Dickens was in fact an inspiration for this uniform by British fashion designer Andrew Buckler. Apparently, so was Gangs of New York.

That tailcoat is made from pure sheepskin and was designed for "maximum visual impact." Thus the asymmetrical cut and what looks like Nana's missing poodle Frou Frou draped around this guy's neck.

Buckler's store is just three blocks away from the James, so his appointment as designer for the staff uniforms fits into the hotel's aim to be locally minded.

While this winter version of the doorman's get-up is somewhat comical, the rest of Buckler's designs are modern takes on classic looks (boarding school girls' uniforms, cashmere vests and pageboy hats) in rich, autumnal colors that coordinate with the decor.

We're quite fond of the pencil skirt and boots look, and if we were a dude we'd be into that Guy Ritchie look on the far left.

What do you think? Do you dig the Dickens look or do you think the doormen drew the short straw in the style lottery? Put on your best Heidi Klum accent and unleash your inner fashion critic in comments below.

Charles Dickens Lives!

Looks like a young Fagin...hopefully guests will do better than gruel for breakfast.

Cute Fagin

I might have paid more attention in 8th grade if we read Dickens novels with photos like this in them.
