Would You Book a Hotel Room One Year in Advance? Mickey Mouse Hopes So

July 7, 2010 at 1:56 PM | by | Comment (1)

Even though it won't open until August 29, 2011, Disney's newest resort in Hawaii, The Aulani will start taking reservations on August 2. Yup, that's more than a year away. And: this is the first Disney hotel that's not positioned next to one of its theme parks.

Which got us thinking: would you book a hotel room 12 months in advance? Do you like careful forward planning, or do you prefer to travel spontaneously? Of course, Disney is all about families, and it can take military precision to plan a kid-friendly vacation. So perhaps advance planning makes sense here.

But then: do you know when you can take your vacation days next August? Will you even have a job?

We fall somewhere in the middle of the planning continuum—we like to know what our big vacation will be each year, but we also love to take advantage of last-minute deals thanks to the wealth of travel booking sites. online sales and other tools we now have at our disposal. (Also: we don't have kids, so we don't need to pander to demands from the little ones about getting to the next big Disney destination.)

Besides, most airlines won't even let you book that far in advance. American Airlines is only taking online reservations through the end of May 2011, for example. What if we book a room for a week at The Aulani and then get screwed on airfare?

Tell us what you think. Have you ever booked a hotel room months and months in advance--and why? Would you book a room one year out if it meant securing your family vacation for next year? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Not the first

I think the folks at Disney's Hilton Head Island Resort and Disney's Vero Beach Resort will disagree with your claim that this is Disney's first non-park-adjacent hotel. If I'm remembering correctly, those two resorts have been open for nearly a decade.
