Where to Stay If You Want to Celebrate Bastille Day

July 7, 2010 at 9:31 AM | by | Comment (1)

Now it's July 7, Independence Day is old news. The next big nationalist celebration—other than the party going down in whichever country wins the World Cup on Sunday—is Bastille Day. Since France is immersed in a political spending scandal, Sarkozy and co. may not be celebrating La Fête Nationale in grand fashion, but that doesn't mean hotels can't get their Bastille on.

Here are just some of the hotels getting all French next Wednesday.

SOHO HOUSE NEW YORK: Yes, they're Brits, but they had a July 4th party, too. For their French friends, Soho House is throwing a Bastille Boogie, featuring games of petanque and foosball, pastis to nibble on, and Rosé to sip. For more information and to talk your way onto the guest list, email boogie@sohohouseny.com. Rooms for the night of July 14 start at $700 a night.

KINGSBRAE ARMS, NEW BRUNSWICK: This St. Andrews By-The-Sea inn is a Relais & Chateaux property, so you know the food is to die for. For Bastille Day, the chef Scott Johnson will serve dishes inspired by his Quebecoise grandmother in a special dinner tasting for hotel guests. (For a peek at his usual brand of gourmet plates, we recommend checking out the inn's Facebook page.) Best of all? There is no additional charge for the Bastille Day dinner for guests of the hotel.

PARIS LAS VEGAS: We'd never suggest that hitting up this Vegas casino is anything at all like the real thing, but, hey, if you find yourself on The Strip next week, keep in mind that Paris is offering a Bastille Day Package. It's not actually available on Bastille Day, but Barry Manilow is involved. That's something, no? The package includes a room, two seats to Manilow's latest show, a $75 food credit valid at Le Provençal, and Eiffel Tower Ride admission for two. There is a two-night minimum and it starts at $252.67 a night. It's available this weekend—Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, and the following weekend, too.

HOTEL LE SEVEN: We've been tapping our feet waiting for this hotel and its floating beds to open forever and, merci!, its soft opening was at long, long last this past Saturday. We don't know what revelry they have planned for the holiday but just knowing that the hotel has opened its doors is reason enough for us to celebrate Bastille Day. Rooms start at €158 for the night of July 14. Vive le France!

And if none of these hotels take your fancy, and you simply must get your fill of French hospitality, look for your nearest Sofitel Hotel. We're guessing that their focus on French luxury means that every day is kinda like Bastille Day. N'est-ce pas?

Bastille Day in New York

New York City has a very good Bastille Day celebration sponsored by Alliance Francaise.  It is on Sunday, July 11 on 60th St between Lex and 5th.
