So, the hard-to-please readers of Curbed may not love the exterior of The James New York, but isn't it what's on the inside that's more important? That's what our moms always told us, and last night we had the chance to test this theory at the James as they opened their doors for a little preview of what's to come when the hotel opens in September.

In short, we liked what we saw. The basic Queen rooms here may be small but the combination of the dark wood, designer furniture and peekaboo bathroom—with a printed privacy screen!—makes them feel more airy and comfortable. Large windows—that open—also prevent the claustrophobic feeling of many small NYC hotel rooms, and they add to the downtown residential feel of the hotel.

Take a spin through our photo gallery here, and stay tuned for more sneak peeks from The James soon.

Oh, and if you like what you see and are ready to try it in person, there are still rooms available for opening night, September 1, from $349 for a Queen. That's the opening special, which saves you $50 off the best available rate.
