Starwood Wants An Even Bigger Bite Of The Big Apple

The W New York Downtown: Starwood's next move in NYC.

Here we are in the middle of one of the busiest summers for New York City hotel openings—and along comes Starwood with plans for even more new hotels. Today there are 12 Starwood-operated properties in the city. But with six more on the horizon, Starwood can boast—and is boasting—that it will open more hotels in NYC than in other city in the world this year. And this is after dropping a couple of Ws earlier this year—with the Court and the Tuscany departing the Starwood family to become St. Giles hotels.

According to Starwood, 75% of its portfolio in New York will be brand new or freshly renovated by 2011.

Losing track? We don't blame you—there's a lot going on. That's why we've compiled a handy little list of the new Starwoods, along with the scheduled opening dates, so you can play along at home and see if they hit their targets...

· W New York Downtown: The newest Starwood New York star by far, it opens August 16.

· Aloft Harlem: The first NYC outpost of Starwood's "stylish new select service lifestyle brand derived from the DNA of W Hotels" opens August 19.

· Aloft Brooklyn: Not to be left out, the county of Kings gets one, too, on October 21.

· Element New York Times Square West: Another first for the city is the new Element, offering an "eco-savvy experience for longer-stay guests." It's scheduled to open on October 14.

· Sheraton Tribeca: Brooklyn got its Sheraton in June, but Tribeca has to wait until November 11.

· Four Points by Sheraton Long Island City: It's not bookable yet but the opening date is set for October 21.

Sheraton Manhattan

What is scheduled to happen with the former Sheraton Manhattan? I remember it being closed for possible sale, renovation, or re-branding (since it was a Starwood owned property).

Element's Location

Why are they just plopping down hotels anywhere?  Is this Element really going to attract the guests their brand is designed for while being on such a crappy block of Manhattan?
