As regular readers of HotelChatter know, we've been keeping our eyes on the W New York Downtown for quite some time and that includes obsessively, compulsively checking out those room rates. Today, we finally found something we can book at the hotel, which is opening on August 16.

Last month we analyzed the hotel's Grand Opening Specials and were disappointed to see that regular room rates were going for $399 a night, while the "Who Put the W in Wall Street?" opening package was a hefty $559 a night.

But in looking at the hotel's reservations system today, we see that rates for August 20-22, the first weekend the hotel is open are actually more affordable at $242 a night for a wonderful room (before taxes and fees.) That's a fully pre-paid rate and no changes are allowed but that's over a $150 less than what we anticipated.

Best available rates, which are changeable, start at just $269. Still good!

Even the opening package, "Who Put the W in Wall Street?", is discounted. That now starts at $399 on the weekends and $529 during the week. The package includes two specialty cocktails, a downtown New York walkng tour, late night in-room dining credit up to $50, breakfast for two at BLT each day of your stay, a suit press and shoe shine, the new W "Symmetry" CD, two-way car service to the NYC-area airports and if you book by September 7, you'll get Triple Starpoints from SPG.

That's a seriously good deal, especially if you can nab it on a weekend. The package is good from August 16-October 11 and a two-night stay is required.

However, room rates on opening night and future weeknights are still too high for us at $359 a night. Blech. So if you want to save at the W New York Downtown, stay on the weekends.
