Well well well, the folks at the Stafford are getting serious now that it’s been taken over by Kempinski. Maybe it’s a reaction to Big Brother, maybe they’re offering us a cunning excuse to drink away the evenings, but they’re launching a new series of lectures called Pub Talk in their American Bar.

When we say “lectures”, we mean it in the loosest sense. The official description is “evenings filled with fine pursuits” – by which they mean drinking, eating, and having a little conversation. They call it an “interactive lecture” – by which they probably mean they’re expecting boozy heckling. And at the helm will be “in-house experts and luxury brand ambassadors discussing some of the finer things in life” (think booze).

The series kicks off 10 August with a lecture called Cellar Talk led (not given, see?) by the hotel’s resident sommelier Gino Nardella, who’ll advise on staring and maintaining your own wine collection. You’ll get a guided tasting and some canapés to stave off the drunkmonster to go with it.

In future, they have Savor Local Flavours with the hotel’s culinary team (August 24), Cigars and Cognac: a tasting and tutorial (14 September) and An Evening of Catwalk-worthy Style (28 September).

But there are two really good things about that. First, they’re all free. Second, you don’t have to be staying at the hotel to take part. In fact, they’re actually inviting real, live Londoners. How very inclusive. As long as you “enjoy stimulating, casual conversation about superior food, drink, and fashion”, of course.

Reservations are recommended – email rsvp.london@kempinski.com if you want a pew.
