The James New York: Fugly Or Not?

Strolling in SoHo yesterday, we noticed a hive of activity going on in the mezzanine of The James New York site, and we also thought the building looked quite striking against the summer sky. (We dig the nearby Havaianas mural, too!)

But the commenters over at archi-geek site Curbed aren't so kind in their assessment of the hotel's design.

What do you think of The James' architecture? Is it Fugly or Fabulous?

Here's a close-up of the glassed elevator and the piece of Matthew Jensen art tacked onto the concrete.

And here are the standout insults from the notoriously tough Curbed peanut gallery:

Tried to make it look like The Standard ... An architectural abortion.

If the Standard is an Oreo this is a Hydrox.

More like Hydrox with the cream already licked off and dropped on the floor for the dog to pick up.

There are also mentions of hospitals, East Berlin, cheese graters and terrorists, and then there's the anonymous soul who wrote:

wow, so gorgeous

the BEST hotel downtown!

That's sweet and all, but the place doesn't open until September 1st. Premature much?

What's your take on The James? Love it or loathe it, let rip with your uneducated architectural analysis in comments below!

I don't mind it!

I can see the Standard influences and I hated the Standard when it first went up. But now, I kinda like it. I think it will pull together at the end. And at least it's not as strange looking as the Cooper Square Hotel!
