We've all heard of hotel yoga and Pilates classes, but Rancho La Puerta is stretching its usual exercise offerings. The Mexican health and fitness spa, located 45 minutes south of San Diego, is now offering bar method classes.

The workout-of-the-moment bar method revolves around a barre, the same one that ballerinas and dancers use for their warm-ups, for a series of exercises. It's supposed to help sculpt lean, firm muscles in your chest, upper arms and upper legs. That sure as heck beats the tedious treadmill.

You can get behind the barre during the hotel's weeklong bar method intensives, in which you'll stretch and sweat in daily classes. A teacher and a spotter will show you the moves and watch over to make sure you're stretching those arms correctly. The next weeklong intensive is June 5 to 12, with Emily Feinstein from the San Francisco Marina studio teaching.

If you're already a bar method student, are new to Rancho La Puerta, and have bought at least one package in 2009 or 2010 at any bar method studio, you can get a 10 percent discount for the hotel's intensive.

In case you can't make it this go-around, a bar method intensive will be offered in the fall, September 25 to October 2. Rooms start at $2,980 (which includes lodging, food and other fitness classes) for the week of June 5. Hey, it's gonna cost you to get a dancer-like bod.
