The Chatwal Drops Its Scaffolding Ahead Of Its Big Day in August

If you've been hanging around HotelChatter long enough, you'll know that we've been waiting years for The Chatwal New York to open. We have been tantalized by details about its restaurant, beds, customized scent, branded playing cards, indoor lap pool, bathroom design, and ultra-fancy mirrored-desks. We held out like tortured lovers for the tiniest hint of an opening date. And then—gasp!—we finally got one: August 1st.
And with that, we almost forgot the heartache, the obsession, the Facebook stalking, and the endless speculation about what the hell this long-awaited high-end hotel would look like.
Until last week. That's when we were strolling up 44th Street—an area we usually try to avoid, but hotel-hopping makes it an inevitability. We were so used to seeing the scaffolding that usually shrouded The Chatwal that it took us a few moments to register that it had gone and we had to double back to check that we were on the right street.
Indeed we were, and indeed you are looking at the new and improved Lambs Club building, designed by Stanford White, completed in 1905—and brought back to life in 2010 by architect and designer Thierry Despont.
And, yes, that's a Subway next door and a gastropub on the other side. Not quite what the theatrical dudes of the original Lamb's Club probably had in mind for their future surroundings, but, well, this is Times Square.
Now, just 31 more days until we get to see the inside! But, hey, who's counting?
