With peekaboo tubs and larger-than-life LCD screens popping up in hotels all over the world, it can take something pretty extraordinary to get our attention when scoping out a room. Or even something extremely humble. Like this nifty little washer-dryer combo that we spied tucked away in a Deluxe Corner Suite at the Emporium Hotel in Brisbane last week.

Doing the washing may be incredibly mundane, but sometimes on the road it is entirely necessary. And should we really have to spend twenty bucks or more to send our laundry off in one of those branded canvas hotel bags hanging in the closet? (Confession: When the laundry bags are plastic, we swipe them to use for packing our... dirty laundry.)

We're not saying we'd always seek out a hotel room with a washing machine, but we've done our time washing socks in hotel sinks and let's just say we'd would much rather pop a load on and not have to tiptoe around our bathroom avoiding getting dripped on. (We also find the hum of a washer-dryer kind of peaceful and zen. Is that weird?)

The washer-dryer here is part of a large deluxe corner suite at the Emporium that is often booked by entertainment-biz types and families wanting extra space. It has two bedrooms but the second room can also be set up as a dining or living room if you don't need the extra beds.

The design of this suite and the rest of the hotel reminded us of some of the hotels in the Kimpton chain, no?

The deluxe corner suite starts at AUD$444 a night, and standard rooms at the Emporium can be as low as AUD$225 a night, with advance booking.
