Hyatt Might Step Up to the Plate for New Chicago Hotel Near Wrigley Field

The eight-story hotel will sit back from the rest of the building.

When we last heard about Chicago's Wrigleyville Hotel, officials predicted the boutique property near Wrigley Field would open during the Cubs' spring season, but it looks like we'll have to sit through extra innings until the hotel is built.

An official said the hotel is still going through the approval process, but when it gets the okay, it will take 18 to 24 months to complete construction. Another new development is that Hyatt has expressed interest in managing the 137-room hotel, which is part of Addison Park on Clark, a development that also includes retail outlets and apartments that's a block from the ballpark.

Part of the holdup has been complaints that Addison Park on Clark wouldn't mesh well with the 'hood. To accommodate the community's concerns, the hotel was scaled down from 22 stories to eight, underground parking was added and the upper floors of the hotel will be set back from the rest of the building. Retail space will be available on the bottom two floors.

And while current tenants will have the option to return after the project is complete, locals are worried that costs and shutdown during construction will force out beloved comedy institution iO Theater, whose alumni include Mike Meyers and Amy Poehler.

The Wrigleyville property will fill a big hole on Chicago's North Side, since the area only has a couple of budget hotels but no boutique option. And none of the other hotels are as close to the El or Wrigley Field.
