The other evening we headed up to the The Roof Club & Garden atop the Gramercy Park Hotel for a light dinner. This space is perfect for guests who want to unwind after a long day with friends or with wine or with both friends and wine. While there, we spied a couple talking closely, two old friends catching up, a woman writing in her notebook as well as a group of friends chatting about their day.

Adding to the low-key atmosphere, the seating options are all patio casual. There's a large communal table, a few small circular tables and low sofas and chairs designed for folks to gather around, converse and linger for a while. Oh and eat.

The Roof Club serves a light menu from 2:30 to 11pm with dishes such as beetroot salad, margherita flatbread, tenderloin steak sliders and pumpkin ravioli, along with several dessert dishes and of course, a full bar.

The restaurant was out of the two salads that we would have liked to order so we settled on the flatbread and the ravioli. Both were yummy but definitely on the pricey side ($21 for the flatbread, $24 for the ravioli.) Our white wine was somewhat reasonable at $15 a glass. (We've been to other luxury hotels that charge $18 and up.)

The garden section, where we sat, was beautiful and relaxing as the sun went down over the city. It's definitely a place to get away from the hustle and bustle. The roof is also retractable but the weather was a little too breezy the night we visited so we found ourselves enjoying the last sips of our wine inside. There we found a couple chillaxing on the couch watching the Lakers game. So this place is definitely laid-back, almost literally.

The Roof Club and Garden is open to hotel guests but non-guests are also welcome. However, they must make a reservation with the concierge prior. And just because this is the GPH, we have to mention The Rose Bar--they will turn you away without a reservation, even if no one is in there. But if you show up before 9pm, the place is all yours.
