Your own Fido doesn't have to be a pro surfer to compete. The only requirement is that he must love the water. There's a warm-up session before the contest and Coronado Surfing Academy instructors will be there to help. Specially made doggie life vests and surfboards will be provided.
There are three heats—one for small dogs, one for big dogs, and one for human-dog pairs. The contestants have 10 minutes to catch as many waves as they can; their two best attempts will be considered by the judges. They will be judged on confidence, ride length and overall ability rip waves. Though judges can't help but take into account cuteness and costumes as well. Top finishers in each category will win a stay at the hotel.
If your pooch wants to try surfing, registration is still open and costs $50. Proceeds will benefit the San Diego Police's Canine Unit. Spectators can watch for free and partake in the post-surf barbecue. Whether you are in the contest or just want to watch it, take advantage of the hotel's Surf Dog package, which offers a room rate of $149 per night May 21-24.
