The 63rd Annual Cannes International Film Festival officially kicked off last night at the Majestic Barriere Hotel and it was red carpet lover's ultimate fantasy with celebs in tuxes and fluffy ballgowns everywhere. Kate Beckinsale! Benicio del Toro! Cate Blanchette! Russell Crow! Jean Claude Van Damme? Yet while the Majestic gathers the headlines for a few days each year, all this film festival business may have taken a toll on its kitchen. The NY Times points out that the only big name hotel left with a Michelin star is The Martinez which has two-stars at its La Palme D'or restaurant. Previously, all the grand hotels boasted Michelin stars. But the NYT says there are still some great dishes to be had at smaller places.
Another issue for film buff guests at Cannes hotels is WiFi. But here's how the Obsessed with Film blog got around it at their hotel just outside Cannes:
The hotel lounge/bar, the only place the wi-fi in the hotel seems to want to work, has effectively been turned into our personal business centre… with laptops, cameras and wires strune around the room.
The management staff seem happy enough for us to sit and eat take-away pizza and our own beer in the lounge/bar area, which is great news given the 3euro price tag on a 25cl bottle of Heineken.
Take-away pizza and beer in the hotel lobby with WiFi? Loves it.
The Cannes Film Festival will run through May 23rd. Please wake us up once Paris Hilton leaves.
