Want a Free Weekend at Starwood? You Have to Scavenge for It

Are these people lounging or scavenging?

Loyalty programs sure don't make it easy for you to win those free weekend nights, do they? Last week Starwood Hotels' SPG Program announced their "Free Weekend Night" promotion which would give SPG Members a free weekend night for every three stays completed between May 1 and July 31.

We took issue with the promotion because we don't think staying three different Starwood stays is as easy as they made it sound. Well, Starwood has just announced a new way to win a free weekend night with their Global Media Scavenger Hunt.

The SPG "Passport to Free Weekends" contest kicks off May 12 and will award a total of 200 Free Weekend Nights to 100 winners over the course of 10 business days. The scavenger hunt will leverage SPG's presence on Facebook and Twitter, where members will find clues leading them to the Starwood property that holds the daily Free Weekends prize. Each day, Starwood will award the first 10 winners with two Free Weekend Night Awards to be used at over 920 properties across the globe -- from Dallas to Dublin to Doha.

Folks participating in the scavenger hunt will have to deduce which Starwood hotel--in one of the 100 countries where Starwood has hotels--the clue is hinting at (no, we don't recommend flying to hunt down every clue.). Once they've determined the hotel, they will have to approach the front desk to claim their prize by saying, "I'm here for my Free Weekends Passport photo." Also, the first ten winners will get a "passport" photo taken which will go up on SPG's Facebook and Twitter pages so if you're participating, look camera-ready if possible.

The prize is, of course, the two free weekend nights redeemable at participating Starwood Hotels worldwide. The only hotels where the free weekend nights cannot be used are the Category 7 properties aka the best ones and hotels that do not offer standard room categories, of which there are only two. For all the gory details on the contest rules, go here.

To participate you have to "like" the SPG page on Facebook and follow @SPGInsider on Twitter. You also have to be a member of the SPG program but anyone can sign up today. The clues will be posted every day...er...night at 12am EST. So if you really want to be the first 10 winners, set your alarms!

Too busy to be bothered with a social media scavenger hunt? We don't blame you. You can simply register for the free weekend nights promotion here.
