The Marina Bay Sands in Singapore Opens Today (But Hotel Rooms Not Until May 6)

Hotels often host "test guests" in the pre-opening stages so they can try out everything in the rooms and public spaces before the real paying guests show up. While last December we were jealous of the folks who got to test Aria Resort and Casino in Las Vegas before it opened, we're now even more jealous of the 2,000 folks currently shacking up at the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, which officially opened phase one of its massive complex today (at the feng shui approved time of 3:18pm.)

Today's opening included 963 hotel rooms, parts of the shopping mall and convention center, a few restaurants and bars, the Event Plaza and the most important part of all--the casino.

Later on June 23, during the official grand opening celebration, the Sands will open the remaining hotel rooms (2,560 in all), more shops, restaurants and nightlife options as well as The Sands SkyPark, which is spread out across the property's three hotel towers...the tops of those towers, nearly 60 stories off the ground.

And you better be hungry when you visit. Back in October we told you about the chef orgy that was ready to blow at joint with chefs like Mario Batali, Wolfgang Puck, Daniel Boulud, Santi Santamaria, Guy Savoy and Tetsuya Wakuda expected to open restaurants.

Room rates for the starting room category, an Atrium Room (which are found up to floor 22 and are pretty typical modern hotel rooms), start at around for $276.427 (USD) but rooms do not open to real guests until May 6.

Too bad!

Totally bummed.  My wife was just in Singapore this past week and I would have loved to have sent her by to check it out for future travels.  Oh well, maybe next time, thanks for the article.
