Sure, most hotels have art—and some even make a big show of displaying it gallery-style. But the people behind the Art Series hotels in Melbourne take that concept to the extreme, with their hotels named after renowned Australian artists. First came The Cullen, where the rooms are modern and the art animal-centric. Now we have The Olsen, which recently opened in South Yarra. This time the artist is in his eighties, and the vibe, like his art, is more serene and outdoorsy. Quite pretty, in fact.

John Olsen is known for his landscapes, so the large prints in the hallways and suites are heavy on green, while the large mural in the lobby is of Melbourne's Yarra River, which Olsen likens to the Seine. Talking to ABC Radio, Olsen said he wanted his work for the hotel to be "full of optimism" and that his mural had to have "the wow factor."

"It's got to reach out and say, 'Come to my party.'"

Now, there's a design maxim more hotel architects and artists should endorse!

Olsen has yet to stay at the hotel bearing his masterpieces and name, but when he does, you'll find him in the special "Olsen Apartment" residence on the top floor. "I"d certainly book myself into that," he said on air.

Studio Suites at The Olsen start at $249 AUD this weekend—which is around $232 USD a night.

The next Art Series Hotel in Melbourne will be The Blackman, scheduled to open in August.
