The episode was a nail-biter. The cheftestants’ challenge was to cook up a soul food meal for Mekhi Phifer’s birthday bash. Samuelsson impressed the judges with a barbecue chicken, deconstructed mac and cheese and collard greens dish; we hope to see it on the C-House menu soon. But the nerve-wracking portion came at the end of the show with the judges’ panel. Spoiler alert: After chef Carmen Gonzalez won the challenge and advanced to the next round, there was a second spot open to accompany her. It was down to Samuelsson and chef Monica Pope.
The audience quietly nibbled on free appetizers—like tomato-chutney-and-chickpea samosas, fingerling potatoes topped with cheese—and waited for the decision. When Samuelsson was named the winner, the crowd in the bar erupted into cheers, and Samuelsson was all smiles. Then he was bombarded by people who wanted to pose for photos.
As Samuelsson advances in the competition, the lounge will likely host more viewing parties, so keep an eye out so you can get your chance to meet the possible next Top Chef Master.
