WTF? Jacuzzis Top The List of What Hotel Guests Want

March 9, 2010 at 9:45 AM | by | Comments (5)

UPDATE: As Pete from Orbital Media (the company who analyzed this data) wrote in to tell us, this was not in fact a poll. The list was based on the number of times people have searched online for the keyword combinations "Hotel with a Jacuzzi" or "Hotel with Internet." So there you go. Plenty of people are Google-dreaming of hotel Jacuzzis, regardless of what they'd really ask for in a hotel.

Here comes a piece of hotel news that makes us say, WTF? According to research published by the Wyndham Grand London Blog, a Jacuzzi tops the list of Top Ten Things People Want in a Hotel.

We’re not sure who the researchers polled for this, but it wasn’t us. Regular HotelChatter fans know how we feel about Hotel WiFi, and in this poll the blanket “Hotel with internet” comes in a pitiful second.

A company called Orbital Media analyzed the data, culled from Google and Wordtracker.com, to come up with the following list:

1. Hotel with a Jacuzzi
2. Hotel with internet
3. Hotel with pool
4. Hotel with suites
5. Hotel with hot tubs
6. Hotel with spa
7. Hotel with family rooms
8. Hotel with kitchenettes
9. Hotel with smoking rooms
10 Hotel with balconies

Some of these amenities are practical and make sense (family rooms, kitchenettes), but what’s with the obsession with getting wet? Is it really that important? We suppose it depends where you’re traveling, but we’d take a free coffeemaker over an in-room Jacuzzi any day.

What do you think of this list? What would top yours? Tell us your hotel must-haves in the comments below.

stop encouraging them

whoever voted for jacuzzis is just giving hotels another reason to charge for wifi. i'm also distressed by the fact that a "hotel with internet" doesn't specify if it's free wifi, pay for wifi or cabled internet. UGH. get your priorities straight people! and it shouldn't involve jacuzzis!

Wifi is your thing

The Hotel Chatter free hotel wifi crusade is clear.  And, if I can get free wifi (or wired Internet) at a hotel, it's a nice perk.  But, please don't go so far as to tell people to "get your priorities straight".

When I travel, the ability to connect to the Internet for free is pretty low on my list of hotel requirements.

true

thanks for shaking us down a bit. free Wifi is probably not for everyone. but still, jacuzzis at the top of this list is quite surprising.

that said, what would top your list for room amenities or requirements? mine would probably be a mini-bar that doesn't charge you for snacks and drinks.

Thanks

Thanks for taking the constructive criticism!  I appreciate it.

For me, before I look at amenities, I consider location.  Also, I refuse to stay at properties with exterior entry (motel-style outside corridors).  When I'm in a hotel room, I want natural light without having strangers look at me like I'm in a zoo.

With amenties, I'd put cable options first.  Nothing makes me happier than finding a hotel with more than basic cable stations.  And, bonus points if I can get easily identified radio stations (pop, easy-listening, jazz, etc) for background music at the push of a button.

My #2 amenity would be free parking.  Nothing irritates me more than having to pay to park in a surface lot that would be empty if I weren't staying there.  Parking should not be a revenue-generator.  The only exception I'd make is for hotels with underground/multi-story parking ramps.  But, hotels should not try to shake down guests with parking fees of over $20/night.

Correction to this post

Hi there,

I'm Pete from Orbital Media www.orbitalmedianetwork.com, the company who analyzed the data for this research.

I enjoyed reading your post. Although just to clarify, the Wyndham Grand London Post doesn't say this is "polled" information. It references "search data volumes" from "Google.com and Wordtracker.com" i.e the number of times people have searched for the keyword combination "Hotel with a Jacuzzi" or "Hotel with internet".

To be honest the data surprised us as much as you. Plus can I just say that I'm a huge advocate of hotels offering unlimited Wifi.

Hope that helps clarifies things.

All the best.

Pete
