Skip The Valet Parking at Andaz and Hit Up a Meter Instead (Just Bring Plenty of Coins)

Here at HotelChatter, we’ve heard of some obscene parking charges. And while admittedly this one doesn’t quite trump the $75 overnight fee at Smyth Tribeca, we were pretty shocked by it.

Over the weekend, we went to visit a friend staying at Andaz WeHo. Having stayed there before, we remembered they had ridiculous overnight charges ($28, since you ask), but we were hoping that for an in-out visit of under an hour (not as dodgy as that sounds, we swear) there would be different rates.

And indeed there were, only not in the way we had hoped. We pulled up at the front entrance to have the valet tell us it’d be $10 per 20 minutes, up to a total of $40. Er, wot? That, of course, was valet. We could also, he said, self-park for as long as we wanted (ie about 45 minutes) for $20. Then he mentioned something even more bargainous about an overnight fee being only $25, but we were so swept away by the $10 for 20 thing that it went over our head.

Anyway, needless to say, we jogged on. All the places around it were full (even that weird western resto) but then we suddenly spied a meter about 40 seconds walk from the hotel. The cost? The standard $1 per hour. Plus we drank some of the free wine doing the rounds at reception.

As the General Manager of Andaz West Hollywood, I would like to comment on your recent experience with parking at our hotel.  While I appreciate that parking is expensive in West Hollywood, and the greater Los Angeles area, I would invite you to familiarize yourself with other hotel valet parking charges in the area and you will certainly come to the conclusion that our parking rates are competitive.  All the best.

I Can't Believe It

I'm currently shopping around for a nice local hotel suite for my boyfriend's birthday in a few weeks, and I'm outraged at how many of these places will charge me $150 a night for a hotel room, yet when I look online, I'm discovering that they charge $30/night for parking. And of course since none of the hotels tell me that upfront, I'm only learning it when I look at the reviews for them. Needless to say, I'm avoiding any place that's planning to charge me the price of a black market lung just to exit my car on their premises.
I'm also outraged that the "manager" that posted before me had the nerve to say that their parking prices were "competitive" which seemed (in their mind at least) to make it okay to charge people insane rates for parking. Here's a CRAZY idea- how about you DON'T charge insane fees for parking, and more people will flock to your hotel and you'll have an up on the other hotels in the area.

agreed!

I couldn't agree more. Parking charges get me fuming even more than wifi charges. you have a massive garage behind your hotel, it costs you nothing to run it, yet you want to sting me for $30 even though i've already paid you for a room? it's insane.
i can understand it somewhere like new york or london, where it's unusual to drive, but in a place like LA where everyone arrives in cars? It's just rude.
