Fairmont Launches New Online Community: Glorious Photos and Reviews Only, Please

February 8, 2010 at 3:00 PM | by | Comments (3)

Have you stayed at a Fairmont Hotel recently and loved your stay so much that Tweeting about it nor Facebooking nor uploading photos to Flickr was satisfactory enough for you to to tell the whole world just how much you loved your stay?

Well Fairmont has a way for you to get your stellar Fairmont experiences out onto the interwebs. The hotel chain just announced their own online community today called, Everyone's an Original.

On top of being a platform for brand and hotel storytelling, the EAO site will also serve as a timely and comprehensive resource for travelers seeking hotel and destination information and visuals.

Designed to support and house rich media content including high quality digital video and podcasts, vignettes from Fairmont will range from tours of suites made famous by visiting VIP or celebrities to tips on how to fully explore the locale, whether it's eyeing The Big Five on a game drive at Fairmont Mara Safari Club in Kenya or exploring the cultural diversity of Boston's North End during a visit to the Fairmont Battery Wharf.

Ensuring a sense of authenticity, Fairmont guests will also be encouraged to post short vignettes from their travels.

It's interesting that Fairmont is just doing this now as many other hotel chains have attempted this in years past (Hyatt, Sheraton, etc.). However, Fairmont's site looks prettier than the others we've seen and has far better navigation and technology. Plus, it actually has a lot of content on it (in it?) already. We especially like flipping through the featured photos which are fed in from Flickr.

But as with all of these types hotel community sites, only the most flattering photos and stories will be posted. A sample line from a guest story?

We chose the Kea Lani because it is such a beautiful hotel. It is luxurious but not at all pretentious. The grounds are lush and relaxing and the staff is warm and friendly. The beach is the most lovely and accessable [SIC} one I have ever been to. We stayed until the last possible minute, and almost didn't leave!

We think this site has potential but right now, it's limited to gushing Fairmont fans (although they do sound legit.) Perhaps they could include an FAQ section where guests or prospective guests could engage in Q&A about hotel specifics--like pricing for certain services (WiFi, parking etc.) Right now, it looks as if the only way to do this is to comment on specific posts.

Would you be keen on dropping your review on Everyone's An Original? Or will you stay with your tried and true review sites? Put your thoughts in comments below.

Everyone's an Original is simultaneously kicking off a photo contest, Original Memories Photo Contest in which Fairmont guests send in their photos from their stays and a little bit about why their experience was so great. The grand prize winner gets a five-night stay at a Fairmont hotel and $1,000 airfare credit. Go to the site for more details.

Not necessarily positive reviews only

The Fairmont people told me last month they would not be censoring posts, aside from R-rated stuff. But they told me specifically that negative reviews would stay up. If anyone is finding that not to be the case, please let me know, as I'd love to follow up on that...
