Do we smell a pretender to the Soho/Shoreditch/Dean Street/Babington House throne of Soho House founder Nick Jones? Mark Fuller, who owns the sexy Sanctum Soho, has just announced that he’s opening a country outpost. Or rather, when we say “opening”, we mean “closing down one hotel and reopening it under a different brand.”

Fuller already owns The Inn on the Green in Cookham Dean, in Berkshire, but on 1 April he’s going to tart it up and relaunch it as the Sanctum on the Green. The nine-roomed boutique hotel will open on April 1 in Cookham Dean, Berkshire. Expect the same sexy Sanctum decor (specifically, “rich veneers, dark velvets and glass-beaded wallpaper”, which we loved in Soho), except with nice old beams propping up the ceilings, and green views out the window. And, if it goes well, they’re looking to open two more Sanctum properties – possibly in Chelsea and Brighton.

Fuller told Big Hospitality:

The idea of Sanctum is affordable glamour and a private experience, which people want. We’ve taken the rock and roll aspect of the London hotel and put it in a country hotel to make it a stylish yet relaxing place to stay that we know will do well.”

What we like about this: at 40 minutes, this is nearer to the Smoke than Babington House. What we don’t like: the idea that the cuisine might be anything like that at Sanctum Soho, given that it’s going to be under the auspices of the same chef.

There’s no website yet, but the Inn on the Green site is showing room rates on opening night for £105. Considering Bab House starts at £195, that’s really rather affordable.

Nick Jones, your move.
