Apparently, "centrist purple" is a phrase coined by Mike Suomi of Stonehill & Taylor Architects—the folks behind the new design for the Best Western President Hotel in Times Square.
The blend of Republican red and Democrat blue is part of a larger political theme at that property—but purple is certainly a feature of other hotel designs in New York, too. It was a big part of the W Hotels branding back in 1999, and is making a comeback in many of their hotel room features. It’s also the color of choice for the Crosby Street Hotel logo, it's found on the drapes and chair flowers at the Maritime Hotel and will get some play at The Chatwal and the Mondrian Soho, whenever they end up opening.
But it's not just happening in NYC. Here's where else you can find purple rooms:

· Down in Dallas, The Joule Hotel is using purple throughout the hotel but up in the Penthouse, the entire living suit is decked out in purple hues.

· The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne has also pumped up their hotel rooms with this new hot hue in guestrooms by placing bright purple bedspreads on the bed and adding purple lounge chairs.

· During our stay in Vegas last summer, purple had a starring role in the Panorama Suite at Planet Hollywood

· Even across the pond, "centrist purple" can be found at the Hotel Indigo Paddington who uses it with pinks and reds in the executive king guestrooms on bedspreads and chaise lounges. It's also found on some of the chairs in the hotel's PHI cafe.

· The whimsical rooms at the Van der Valk Hotel Ridderkerk near Rotterdam have not only fantastical paintings above the bed in their Bridal Suite (pictured above) but the executive guestrooms and suites have liberal touches of purple throughout.
So will more hotels follow suit and go purple mad? Will Prince open his own hotel and write a song about it like he did with “Purple and Gold” for the Minnesota Vikings?
We’ll start tracking all purple-loving properties to see where this trend goes, but in the meantime, tell us: Do you have a favorite purple hotel? Even if it’s just an accent or amenity in a hotel you’ve stayed at recently—we want to hear it. Let us know in the comments below.
Many thanks to all the tipsters who sent us word of the purple craze in hotels!
