The bedroom was done up in natural colors with a batik-style bed throw made in Java.

San Diego's Paradise Point Resort & Spa recently unveiled part of its $20 million renovation so we took at peek at the newly done-up bungalow guestrooms. The full makeover will be finished in April.

Set on a 44-acre peninsula in Mission Bay, the resort was originally created as a playground for Hollywood producer Jack Skirball in 1962. Now it's a tucked-away resort that's ideal for families, since SeaWorld is just down the road.

The makeover, by Seattle-based Dawson Design Associates, tries to play on the resort's island theme with Balinese furniture in teak, mahogany and kapur; bamboo-porcelain tiles; and Asian touches. In the one-bedroom bayside bungalow we checked out, the living area has a sofa with a pull-out queen bed and a leopard-print rug. It also had a flat-screen plasma TV and WiFi, but the latter will cost you an extra $10 a day.

Adjacent to the living room is a dining area, a private patio and a small kitchen space. The kitchen has a mini-fridge but no stove, though maybe you can do some cooking in the fire pits outside.

Since it's the low season, this bayside room is starting at $137 a night, though in the high season it could cost as much as $249.
