There's a Porcupine in a Penthouse on Park Avenue!
It's true! If you've been watching the early morning TV shows that broadcast from New York, you may have noticed that some of the zoologists and animal care takers of the San Diego Zoo have been making the rounds to chat up their new Polar Plunge exhibit, which opens in March and gives their resident polar bears a whole fresh environment.
But no, they didn't bring any polar bear with them to New York, even if the temperatures here are about right for them. Instead they brought a few more portable critters, specifically two endangered tortoises (one a spider tortoise!) and prehensile-tailed porcupine. The staff and their small traveling circus have made the penthouse of the pet-friendly 70 Park Hotel their zoo away from home, and we dropped by yesterday to say hi.
After the jump, the cutest animal pictures you will see today!
If you want to get a look at the porcupine, the turtles and even the much-celebrated polar bears yourself, you can always head to the famous San Diego Zoobut we recommend in April or after, when they've got the new polar bear experience open and it begins to get so warm in town that you need a reminder of colder temperatures.
