Remember when we got all excited about the news that NYC would be getting its first outpost of gay-hotel brand Axel? Well, there’s new movement on 42nd Street! The fugly building that used to house a Travelodge and homeless shelter will become a hotel called The Out N.Y.C., set to open some time in 2011.

Back when the initial rumors about this property cropped up, an Axel rep at the company’s headquarters in Barcelona told us that that were just that—rumors. “We don’t have any properties in New York yet,” we were told. “Though we would love to, and we are trying to reach it.”

This week, the developer for 510 West 42nd Street, Ian Reisner, told the New York Daily News that plans for The Out were going ahead—and that the hotel would have 123 rooms, a spa, restaurant, café, shops—and a 10,000-square-foot dance club.

Very good. But is it the same hotel all those Axel rumors were about? We emailed Reisner, who said:

To clarify, it will be “Axel hotel” @ “THE OUT NYC—urban resort”

Um, OK. But does this mean the hotel will be a partnership with the Axel chain? After some more questioning we learned that yes, Axel will be in charge of operations for The Out.

Phew! Glad we cleared that up. And in the meantime, we’ve learned that this is not really a “gay-friendly hotel.” Reisner’s firm, Parkview Developers, refers to it as a “Heterofriendly” Urban Resort.

Friendly and fabulous, we hope.
