The other week we learned that The Gansevoort Hotel Group was suing an affiliate of Credit Suisse, who now owns the Gansevoort South Hotel, challenging their decision to drop Gansevoort Hotels as the hotels' management group. GHG was also upset that the new management group put in its place was allowed to use the name Gansevoort, even though they clearly have nothing to do with GHG.

However, it seems there's a licensing agreement that enables Credit Suisse to continue using the Gansevoort name. There's still a lawsuit in the works but for now, the Gansevoort South will remain, in name, the Gansevoort South.

We couldn't go public with the name of the new management group the other week but today we can--Coral Hospitality, a Florida firm that has a handful of very low-profile hotels, resorts, golf clubs, spas and residences. Judging by their portfolio, the Gansevoort South is definitely their most exciting property.

We'll be keeping an eye out for any changes at the G'voort--will it be less of a party scene or more?--but in the meantime, feel free to send us your reaction or put them in comments below.

Licensing Agreement? This is a joke, right?

Are we kidding?  There's a reason hotel companies are so territorial and possessive over their branding.  Brand names are proprietary in nature and are meant to reflect the operating or owning body of their respective properties.  I would love to see the details of this licensing agreement because I find it difficult to believe that GHG (or any other group for that matter; with the exception of The Ritz-Carlton/Four Seasons Chicago, and that's only for landmark purposes) would allow their name to be used while simultaneously having no affiliation -- management or ownership -- with the property.  I hope GHG comes out on top here.  Maybe some people won't care, but many more, myself included, choose to stay with certain brands because of their reputation, service, and management style.  I don't want to stay at a Gansevoort-branded hotel that has no affiliation with GHG.  Way to be misleading.  Coral Hospitality is going to defend their position strongly because, as Juliana stated above, the "Gansevoort" South would be their most exciting, recognized, and noteworthy property.

Gansevoort south

What is a joke here is that anyone would actually consider Gansevoort to be a brand. If Credit Suisse had any brains they would immediately re-brand this property with a quality flag or operator. Gans South (AKA - The Roney Palace) has been an eyesore in south beach for years. That is why it lingered on the market until some geniuses from NY thought their "brand" was cool enough to sell hundreds of condos in Miami. They would have never sold those even at the peak. Secondly - for anyone associated with the gansevoort to stake claims on protecting their image to live up their standards is just as sad. Gans is NY has horrendous guest service. It flourished cause it was the only game in town (meat packing). They have made their bed and now will lie in it. Good riddance to Gansevoort South.
