After sampling the delicious veal cheek and winter veggies from Wall & Water at Andaz Wall Street’s opening, we were keen to get back for a meal once the restaurant had opened to the real world. Only we’re a little scared of bankers so we instead of dropping in on a bustling weekday morning, we met a friend there on the traditional day of brunch, Sunday.

So, how was it? In a word: quiet. But that’s more than OK with us. We’ve always liked exploring the Financial District on weekends, when the only people walking around are residents and tourists taking photos outside the NYSE. The Andaz lobby was quiet, and the staff welcoming and friendly. Up those white marble stairs we were greeted with this tableau of fruits, juices, and pastries, and a hushed scene at Wall & Water.

If you’re happy without the see-and-be-seen brunch scene, this is a great place to relax, read the paper, and take your time over breakfast. Service was friendly, and the few small hiccups (our server first gave us the dinner menu, and brought us juice when we had said “no, thanks”) were handled graciously.

And the food? All that talk about local ingredients is worth the hype. We ordered the three-egg omelet, which comes with roasted new potatoes, tomatoes, cipollini onions—and pretty much any filling you want, including those not listed as sides on the menu. Our ham, cheddar, and mushroom number was full of flavor, and the side of applewood bacon was meaty, salty, and right in the middle of the soft vs. crunchy scale.

The coffee was strong, and our friend was happy with to see the Ti Kuan Yin (Oolong) tea on the menu. Being quiet meant we were able to sit at a plum table next to the window and within sight of the kitchen, with none of the elbow-bumping and eavesdropping that goes on at most NYC brunch spots.

In short, Wall & Water’s weekend breakfast is worth the trip downtown, or across the river. And if you're a guest here, it's a no-brainer. Breakfast is served from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday.
