How Much is Too Much to Pay for a Bagel at a Hotel?

A bagel from MOZen Bistro at the Mandarin Oriental Las Vegas.

Let’s talk room service, shall we? The story of a former assemblyman and senator from the Bronx who doctored his receipt for a bagel and diet soda on his expense report has had the New York media in a tizzy. The total was $177. Sounds nuts, but if you’ve ever been stung by an overinflated room-service bill for a bagel and a cup of coffee, you know this figure does not necessarily belong in fairy land.

This New York Times story on the varying costs of the bagel found at least two Manhattan hotels that charge over 20 bucks. Which got us thinking: We all know room service and hotel restaurants are horribly overpriced, but just how much is too much to pay for a bagel?

Those pricey bagels the NYT mentions come from Loews Regency Hotel on Park Avenue ($28), and Norma’s at Le Parker Meridien ($23)—but to be fair both come loaded with smoked salmon, the Regency’s bagel is from H & H, and Parker’s also includes three kinds of caviar.

But even your humble bagel with cream cheese can be pricey. The one pictured above was from the MOZen Bistro at Mandarin Oriental Las Vegas ($12), and we once ordered a bagel with cream cheese and coffee at The Waldorf Astoria that added up to about $30. For the kind of bagel you can get for a buck fifty from any street cart on any corner of New York.

Part of the mark-up is of course the delivery charge (around $3) and 20% service charge—this before you even think about a tip—but should we really have to pay extra cash on top of these fees for the convenience of a little morning pastry?

Some hotels are much more reasonable when it comes to the bagel: The Hard Rock Orlando charges $5 for its basic bagel with cream cheese (the smoked salmon version is $15); Hyatts tend to charge around $4, and Hotel 71 in Chicago charges just $3. Now that’s more like it.

OK, we’ve had our grumble—it’s over to you. What outrageous prices have you seen—and paid—for a bagel from a hotel’s restaurant or room service? And what do you think is a fair price, factoring in the convenience of having your bagel brought to your room?

Hold forth in the comments below.

$6

that's the most i would pay and that bagel better be fluffy and wide and topped with the best cream cheese ever. ah, who am i kidding? i've totally paid more than that for a so-so bagel. i hate how hotels trap us like that!

that bagel cost too much

I've also tried the Hard Rock Orlando bagel (smoke salmon) for $15. I guess that is the nice and affordable Bagel I've ever had in more hotels I've been checking in. Well, some hotel bagel, will surely cost you payday loans to have. I remember my friend telling me that the bagel in one of the hotel of Nevada cost him $50, dollars its really something I guess. Well, hotel charges nowadays is quite pricey, so why go for bagel hotel service when you can walk at the downtown and find a bagel shop and you will surely pick your favorite bagel flavors at a very reasonable price.

$5

I think I paid $5 for a terrible Starbucks bagel at HRHC in Vegas.  I would gladly pay $5 for a bagel if it was tasty and on hotel grounds.  The issue I see is that you pay top dollar for sometimes what seems like day old terrible bagels.
