2010 Must-Have Amenity: The iPad

December 30, 2010 at 10:56 AM | by | ()

It's what you've been waiting all year for--The 2010 HotelChatter Awards! We'll be bringing you the best and worst of the year all day today and part of tomorrow. Agree or disagree with our picks? Air your thoughts in comments below.

Steve Jobs and Apple kicked off 2010 with their mega-announcement about their newest, must-have gadget, iPad. While folks simultaneously derided the name and geeked out over the tech specs, we wondered if hotels would start offering the iPad for guests to use? And guess what? Of course they did!

We've been keeping track of hotels offering iPads here whether it be in-room (preferred) or for communal use in the lobby (still gets an A for effort.)

We've also been checking out the new iPad apps that hotels have put forth. While most of them have followed the same disappointing path as hotel iPhone apps, we were greatly encouraged by the InterContinental's new iPad app which offered tons of info and even video for hotel guests and non-hotel guests alike.

While the in-room iPads are still not allowing us to do all that we'd like to do--basically, we'd like to treat it like our own iPad during our stay, complete with fun apps, movies, books, newspapers, unlimited browsing, etc--we're definitely excited to see more iPads in hotels in the future.

And yes, we're eagerly anticipating the day when hotels start using the second generation iPads, you know, the ones with the camera in them?

Woot for the iPad

While mobile products have continued to grow at lightening speeds, I can only imagine it's going to more so this year. Companies, hotels, and so on that really get in on the iPad generation are going to be ahead of the game and I'm excited to see what hotels do.
