Checking In On The Savoy London

When we were invited along to The Savoy London opening we gave it a perfect 10.

But a couple of months have passed since then, so we thought we'd check in to see how things were going, especially now that Gordon Ramsay’s Savoy Grill is now open and a recent TV documentary revealed that the butlers polish everything including the plums. (We aren’t sure we’d want our plums polished, how would we eat them?)

After digging around online we discovered that whilst the press reviews have all been positive, nobody has completely raved about the hotel. The Independent newspaper may have summed it up best. They rated the rooms 4 out of 5, the value 3 out of 5 and the Service 5 out of 5.

And 72 percent of travelers recommended the hotel on Tripadvisor whilst the majority of bad reviews on the site were from before the reopening.

But it’s the Savoy Grill that has been causing a stir lately due to Hell's Kitchen USA champion Holli Ugalde being unable to take up her promised job there due to a visa issue. Gordon Ramsay‘s "family crisis" aka a financial fall-out with his father-in-law has also has been a dark mark. Yet the bad press doesn’t seem to have effected bookings as when we checked the website said the restaurant was fully booked until January.

The first reviews of the Savoy Grill have all been very positive with The Independent’s restaurant critic describing it as “easily the most appealing Ramsay menu I've seen” and giving it 4 out of 5 stars for food, service and ambiance.

TimeOut London also rated it 4 out of 5 stars and both reviews agreed that the food is reasonably priced. Just think with all of that money you save, you can splurge on the £10,000 (approx $15,000) a night Royal Suite.

Normal room rates start at £295 but the hotel are currently having a “Winter Sale” which includes 10 percent off most room rates. If you've stayed in the new Savoy or ate in the Savoy Grill, let us know what you thought!
