The last time we got to tour The Nolitan Hotel, we had to squint as we looked at empty, unfinished rooms and match them up with the renderings in our mind. Yesterday, we got to see an almost finished model room on the 9th floor--a corner room with an open-plan bathroom and soaking tub. (Just a few finishing touches were yet to be made. Most of what you see here is what you'll see if you were checking in.)

As you can see from our gallery, The Nolitan is big on details. The GM worked closely with the architects to anticipate what guests would want at each turn. While the idea of big, hefty duvets was nixed, there is a cashmere red throw across the bed for warmth. Meanwhile, the minibar is stocked with well-priced snacks of the classic variety (M&Ms) and the healthy kind (pistachios, energy bars, etc.)

Corner rooms like this one have tubs, although there are different room configurations, and many only have showers. Yes, they are peekaboo showers but they'll have a curtain option so no one is forced to put on a show if traveling with a friend. (Or even a 'friend'.) All rooms have separate toilets--and yes, they have solid doors. No peeking at the loo, thank god.

Overall, the rooms are simple but striking. We love the mix of textures--the concrete ceilings, the dark walls, the soft headboards, the velvety blue chair--and the way everything comes together to feel modern yet warm and cozy.

Some of the other rooms, the ones with queen beds, are pretty small. We didn't see these ones fitted out with furniture yet but we're guessing that the same daylight that flooded into this corner room will help avoid that boxed-in feeling.

Even better: the smallest rooms have balconies overlooking Kenmare Street, narrow but large enough for a couple of people to enjoy the fresh air, the New York street scene and the feeling the locals get when they sit out on their fire escapes.

We'll have more from The Nolitan as the hotel approaches its opening--which is now looking like soon after Thanksgiving.
