NYC Post Office Turned Amtrak Station Could Also Be Home To a Boutique Hotel

Boy, the area around Penn Station and Madison Square Garden could look different in a few decades. There's that mega-tower planned for the Hotel Pennsylvania and--after Monday's symbolic ground-breaking--the transformation of the James A. Farley Post Office into Moynihan train station, a new home to Amtrak... and possibly even a boutique hotel.

Crain's New York has the scoop on the plans for the new project--reporting that developers The Related Cos. and Vornado Realty (the folks behind that Hotel Penn tower) envision a 200-room boutique hotel on the eastern half of the building.

That would be the half right along Eighth Avenue, with the grand facade pictured above. The facade, we might add, that bears the noble quote often assigned to postal workers: "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds."

According to Crain's

An actual boutique hotel in the space is many years away, but that is so far the most likely use of the space, Mr. [Fred] Bartoli [Moynihan Station Development Corp's project manager] said.

The western half of the post office building will likely become retail space. Construction on the $267 million first phase--which will extend the Penn Station platforms and provide an extra exit underneath the Farley building--begins this month, although it is unclear when later stages will get going.

Still, this is exciting news indeed. Any suggestions for what this new post office-Amtrak station-boutique hotel could be called?
