Still Not Happening: Istanbul's Fantastical Underwater Hotel
You know the feeling you get when you look at fantastical hotel models? You think: "wow wouldn't that be great! Too bad it'll never actually get built." Well, that's how we feel about the rumored Underwater Hotel in Istanbul, Turkey, whichbelieve it or notis due to open later this year.
YEAH RIGHT. Nevermind that we don't have a name for the hotel (the rumor is it's called "Poseidon"--snore!) and nevermind that the information about the place is the same stuff being circulated since early 2008; we would really like to sleep in a 7-star hotel underwater, so we want it to work out, damnit.
Yes, you heard that rightthis baby is aiming to be a 7-star hotel, like Dubai's Burj Al-Arab, except that the Al-Arab is above the water's surface and this one won't be. It's being developed by Tanriverdi Holding, and the budget is a cool $500 million.
Anyone want to guess room sizes? Okay, okay...we'll just tell you; the underwater capsule rooms will be about 550 square feet. It sounds like the first of these Poseidon Resorts is due to open in Fiji soonbut again, it's all words here and no actual buildings to show for it. They do however have an "introductory offer" up on their website:
For $15,000 per person, you can enjoy six nights at "Poseidon Mystery Island." They'll pick you up in a company airplane and fly you out there (to Fiji), give you 4 nights in a beachfront room (read: above the surface) and 2 nights in an underwater room, gourmet meals, and access to scuba diving, other water sports, lectures, and wine tastings. BOR-ING. We're sorry, but we just don't think this is gonna happen this year, and if it does...$15K is a bit steep; we'd sooner head to the Maldives with less than half that money.
