Dial Direct, or You Might Miss Out on Hotel Griffon's $20.10 Deal

Like the New Year's hangover you couldn't shake last weekend, hotels are still rolling out 2010-themed deals to pack rooms during a usually slow travel month. As reported on our sister site Jaunted, January is when you can find some of the steepest discounts, as most people return to chaotic work and family schedules, with no time for R&R.
San Francisco's Hotel Griffon is one hotel offering such a deal, with a "Buy One Night, Get the Second for $20.10" promotion that runs through January. That's kind of unheard of for a hotel that lies on the city's Embarcadero strip, just a stone's throw away from the Ferry Building.
The catch is, your two-night minimum stay has to start on either a Thursday or a Friday. When we checked availability online, we saw a sea of open dates but kept receiving the dreaded "Your requested rate is not available..." message post-search query. However, when we called the hotel, we were told that there are open rooms throughout the rest of the month contrary to what the website may tell you. This informational tidbit reinforces what we often say: persistence—and direct phone calls—often pay off. Or in this case, offset cost.
