Today's the day! W Hollywood Hotel and Residences has opened! And despite what we had previously thought, rooms are actually open tonight for $489 a night for a king bed.

We've been waiting for this W for a long time and it's a bit surreal that this day is finally here. We were able to tour the hotel last week and while traipsing through as the hotel put on its finishing touches, we chatted with the general manager, Jim McPartlin, in a Marvelous Suite which has views of downtown Los Angeles, the Hollywood Hills and the Griffith Observatory. (Note: the Marvelous adjective is W's room category name, not ours.)

McPartlin has worked for both W and Kimpton Hotels in the past and he was also the general manager at the Gramercy Park Hotel when it first opened in 2006. Now he's back with the W family, and back in Los Angeles, to welcome the W Hollywood into the mix.

It's quite obvious that the W will now become the hotel of choice for visitors who want the full-on Hollywood experience (Walk of Fame, Pantages Theater, nightclubs, etc.) but it will also become the hotel of choice for Hollywood itself as the hotel is perfectly set-up for press junkets, after parties and thanks to Drai's nightclub on the top floor, celebrities and their ever-devoted legion of paparazzi.

But what about the guest rooms? We've already told you about the Sanctuary gadget chargers and as this photo demonstrates, the rooms are quite interesting. Not as pretty as W South Beach but definitely in the mold of the "new W" that has been popping up lately.

Now, McPartlin goes on camera to tell us just what is so different about this W from the others and what you can expect when you settle in for the night.

Stayed tuned tomorrow for more room shots and photos from the brand-new W Hollywood!

$489

Sounds expensive for a Hollywood hotel room -- yes?  Those window seats remind me of W SF -- my least favorite W hotel. I always kind of liked W Westwood, despite its location.  Can't wait to see more shots of the guest rooms.

opening night

those rates will come down after opening weekend which is also the same weekend as The Grammys. on the contrary, i love those little window beds. they have them at W San Diego too. plus it allows you to sleep one more person in the room!
