Whether you’re a dude looking to pop the question, or a lady who just likes her baubles, New York’s Diamond District can be intimidating. Bustling and dripping in rings and rocks, yes—but knowing how to navigate all those stores and dealers can be confusing without a friend of a friend in the trade.

Good news: With it’s new Gemologist Package, the Algonquin will be that friend.

Taking advantage of its location near the Diamond District—that’s 47th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues—the storied hotel is launching this package right in time for Valentine’s Day, although it will then be available year-round.

Starting at $1,500, the package gets you two nights in a Premier Suite, continental breakfast and complimentary cocktails for two, and—here’s the real draw—a private consultation with a Diamond District gemologist.

The Algonquin’s calling this specialist “The Gemologist Concierge”—but don’t let the cute name make you think this is just another gimmick like the tanning butler. Unless you’ve been studying engagement ring cuts since you were little, you will probably need help learning how to assess those “4 Cs”—cut, clarity, carat, and color.

The Gemologist Concierge can help you window shop, pre-arrange a selection of gems, stones and settings according to your taste, and advise you on what the hell to do. (Tiffany setting or three stone? Round diamond? Princess or marquise?)

Just make sure you save the cocktails for after your diamond tutorial. That engagement ring is meant to be for life, so you don’t want to drink and diamond shop.
