Amsterdam's Lloyd Hotel To Create a New Fashion 'Catwalk' Hotel

A room at the Lloyd Hotel in Amsterdam.

Touristy trappings and neon signs currently welcome visitors to Amsterdam, none of which say "chic." According to design.nl, the city is hoping to banish the kitsch and turn its entrance into a veritable catwalk, offering a sleeker "Hallo!" to its international friends.

Introducing a high style hotel is a part of the city's makeover scheme, a collaborative project between The Lloyd Hotel Cultural Embassy, AMFI-Amsterdam Fashion Institute and NV Stadsgoed. The Lloyd reflects some of Amsterdam's most forward-thinking design, with cheeky messages about global warming emblazoned on bedding and "fold-away" bathrooms among some of its quirky touches.

The sister hotel, whose projected completion is 2011, will be able to credit its own decor to the ultra-cool students and alumni of AMFI, who will design its interior. Plans for the hotel are still in the early stages, but, reports design.nl:

"The hotel will feature 63 rooms ranging from one to five star. Further more [sic] a new all-day breakfast cafe featuring Dutch regional products will be opened alongside a new design store."

It will be located on the renovated Damrak "Catwalk," one component of the city entrance's renovation.

The buzzword here is design, design, design. We get it; it's going to look oh-so mooi (that's Dutch for "pretty," at least according to our online translator). Since The Lloyd is one of our top fave hotels in Amsterdam, we eagerly await its sister hotel. Although, we have a feeling neither windmills nor a tchotchke shop will be incorporated into the plans.

best regards

I wonder what kind of bed is that? for everyone from the tourist group?:) I really liked the slogan on the blankets anyway! too bad I didn't know about this hotel before (just now came across your helpful blog be means of torrent search ), will try to make use of it next time I'm in Amsterdam;)

Interesting idea

I love the idea and I would certainly love the experience. I hope this new concept expands outside Amsterdam. Each geographical area should build specific hotels, this would most certainly attract tourists. I also saw something interesting at Niagara Falls hotel packages I've already planned a nice vacation there.
