There’s not much to celebrate about the ongoing recession, but at least one bright spot is the fact that Restaurant Week returns to Los Angeles twice a year and is, in fact, two weeks. This time around, it runs from Sunday-Thursday, January 24-29, and January 31-February 5.

Restaurants fall into one of three price categories:
$ Deluxe Dining: Lunch is $16 and Dinner is $26
$$ Premier Dining: Lunch is $22 and Dinner is $34
$$$ Fine Dining: Lunch is $28 and Dinner is $44

This round’s list of participating restaurants is bigger than ever, and includes some of our favorite hotel restaurants in town. Here are our Top 5 Picks, plus a few extras just in case you have the time (and the appetite) to get to them.

The Bazaar at the SLS Beverly Hills Hotel: A first-time participant in the program, Chef José Andres’s temple to culinary chemistry has become a must-eat destination for foodies visiting Los Angeles. Some of the menu choices: chicken croquetas, sautéed cauliflower couscous, various tapas, and Greek yogurt panna cotta. $$$

BLVD 16 at the Hotel Palomar Westwood: This Kimpton property takes eating locally to the next level with its very own onsite food garden is one of the best deals in town, offering a special menu that includes roasted beet salad with watercress in a citrus vinaigrette and topped with toasted pistachios, grilled Jidori chicken with mushrooms and sweet potato dumplings, and an Asian pear and almond tart among other dishes. $$

Checkers Downtown: The restaurant at the Checkers Hotel has been a downtown landmark for decades, and both it and the hotel have been rehabbed by Hilton. The Restaurant Week menu from talented chef Todd Allison includes a garden vegetable salad with Manchego cheese, Guinness beer-battered halibut with garlic parmesan fries, and warm flourless chocolate cake. $$

Ocean and Vine at Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel: Skip lunch here but come for the more interesting dinner menu with dishes such as roasted sweet yam soup with truffle crème fraiche, grilled beef tenderloin with roasted celery root puree and shiitake mushrooms in a pomegranate port reduction, and either lavender crème brulée or warm chocolate banana bread pudding for dessert. $$

Parq at Montage Beverly Hills: For some old-school fine dining in a grandiose Spanish colonial setting, try dishes from the new winter menu like lobster bisque with smoked mushrooms and garden herbs, coffee-crusted NY strip steak with wild arugula and fourme d’alembert cheese in bourbon caramel sauce, and a dense chocolate espresso mousse bar with frosted hazelnuts. $$$

Here are some other hotel restaurants offering deals this time around:
Boxwood Café by Gordon Ramsay at the London West Hollywood: $$
Cézanne at Le Merigot: $$
Dakota Chophouse at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel: $$$ Dinner Only
NineThirty at the W Hotel: $$
Oliverio at the Avalon Beverly Hills: $$
Restaurant at the Sunset Marquis: $$
The Belvedere at the Peninsula Beverly Hills: $$$ Dinner Only
The BLVD at the Four Seasons Beverly Wilshire: $$$ Dinner Only
