The Great Jones Hotel (Not to Be Confused With Grand Street Hotel) is Still in The Works

A rendering of the Great Jones Hotel

Hotel-wise, there’s a lot going on in downtown New York these days. Some great, grand things! And perhaps, like us, you are getting a tad confused by the similar-sounding boutique hotels in the works, the Grand Street Hotel and the Great Jones Hotel. So here’s a quick primer on keeping these two new properties straight.

Helpfully, one has a new name. As we reported last week, The Grand Street Hotel is the one on, um, Grand Street and Thompson in SoHo, and is now known as The James New York. It will have 114 rooms, a second-floor garden and rooftop pool with cabanas. It should also have a big-name chef in the kitchen, but the word is still out on which one …

The celeb chef we do know about is none other than Todd English, who is all up in The Great Jones Hotel in NoHo. This 13-storey sliver of a building was originally planning on having three restaurants and a 24-hour café helmed by English, but this has been scaled back to just one restaurant and lounge. Not because English has been distracted by his drama-filled personal life, but due to complaints from the neighborhood about the potential noise all this revelry could cause.

Here’s what Todd told New York magazine:

They don’t want this to be a rowdy club—thump, thump, thump—and that’s not what I want. I want it to be something that adds to the neighborhood, that gives back to the neighborhood.

Henry Smith-Miller of Smith-Miller + Hawkinson Architects is working on tweaking the Great Jones façade, and takes his revised plans before the Landmarks Preservation Commission today.

No word yet on when either hotel will open, but rest assured we’ll keep you posted.
