Help Haiti With Your SPG and Marriott Points

January 14, 2010 at 11:09 AM | by | Comments (8)

As the aftermath of the massive earthquake in Haiti continues to reveal worse than expected damage, destruction and death tolls, countries and people from around the world are asking what they can do to help.

And help is arriving in some unusual forms. Domestic airlines like JetBlue and American flying medical personnel and doctors to Haiti. (Update: That was a hoax. See comments below.)

For the folks feeling hopeless at home, several text messaging operations have been going around whereby cellphone users text a code to a number and automatically $5 or $10 will be sent to a humanitarian rescue effort. The charges will show up on your bill at the end of the month.

And now we hear that Starwood Hotels' loyalty program, Starwood Preferred Guest is offering a way to help too.

Guests with SPG points can donate them to the American Red Cross. Here is the breakdown:

· 4,000 points is $50
· 8,000 points is $100
· 12,000 points is $150
·16,000 points is $200

This is actually an ongoing program and not something that was created in response to the situation in Haiti. But right now, every little bit helps. Go Here for more details and to send in your SPG Points donations.

You can do this as well with your Marriott Rewards Points too. According to the Charitable Donations on the Marriott Site, this is the breakdown for the rewards donations:

· 18,000 Points: $50 American Red Cross Marriott Cheque
· 33,000: $100 American Red Cross Marriott Cheque
· 60,000: $250 American Red Cross Marriott Cheque
· 180,000: $1000 American Red Cross Marriott Cheque

Donate Frequent Flier Miles too

Frequent fliers may also be able to donate miles to charities helping with Haiti relief effort. Go to your frequent flier program and look under links for Using Miles.

United Airlines allows as few as 1,000 miles for donations to American Red Cross and other charities.

Working link for SPG donations

I just noticed the SPG Red Cross URL link is broken in this post. Here is a working link to SPG donation page:

Use your Points!!!

Thanks!

Im trying to fix the link. There's some ulterior issue here. Will get it fixed soon.

Flights

The airlines have reported today they have no idea where the rumours of free flights for medical personnel came from, but they're not true.

Looks like JetBlue is still doing something

http://twitter.com/JetBlue/status/7736225540: flying personnel into Santo Domingo but only those vetted by Haitian consulate.

The American Airlines thing was a hoax. Shame.

Bill Marriott blogs about Haiti

Our CEO Bill Marriott, who happens to be in Florida, blogged about interactions today with our employees of Haitian descent and his response to relief efforts. Hope you'll give it a read. http://bit.ly/7jUrnR

One year later...

One year later, and Haiti still continues to need our help.  I've been to a few benefit concerts lately...like Zacky Vengeance and Nikki Sixx.  I hope people don't forget about Haiti and continue to support their recovery.
