Some people go on vacation to shop or relax by the pool. Some people go on vacation to run insanely up the stairs of their 73-storey hotel. And if you're staying at the Swissotel Stamford in Singapore in late November, you're likely to encounter some of the second type.

On Sunday November 22, at the much-too-early time of 7.00am, a bunch of people will begin the Swissotel Vertical Marathon 2009. This involves getting up to the top of the hotel the fastest, except taking the elevator doesn't count. The Men's Open and Women's Open champions will both win trips to New York – but not just to sightsee, they'll then compete in the similarly crazy Empire State Building Run-Up.

The one big advantage of making a marathon like this part of your vacation is you'd then be able to eat whatever you wanted, right? Perhaps it's not all bad, then. There are a bunch of different categories and this year for the first time the Lovebirds' Challenge has started – couples can sign up for the race but must cross the finishing line hand-in-hand.

Accommodation in the Swissotel Stamford for the night before the Vertical Marathon starts at S$224 ($155) a night if you book more than a month in advance. You have to pay to take part in the marathon too (which is one more reason why we'll just watch from the sidelines) – starting from S$38 ($26) if you register early.
