As regular HotelChatter readers know, we’re tracking a healthy handful of new hotels opening in New York this winter, and the race is on to see which of them not only opens first but wows guests in the biggest way. The garment district’s major contender, The Strand, is making its first offensive play in the game with its “Room With a View” grand-opening package.

What do you get? Why, a little piece of the hotel’s décor, that’s what. Remember those fashiony black-and-white prints from the Condé Nast archives that will be showcased in the hotel’s lobby? They’re giving them away! Kind of. Guests booking this package will receive their choice of a framed 17 x 17” print by John Rawlings, Clifford Coffin, or Henry Clarke. (You can see some of their work by punching in their names over at the Condé Nast store.)

The weekend package will set you back $595 from October 15 to December 18, and drop to $495 from January 1–April 30, 2010. But the room will cost you at least $279 a night on its own, and those prints are valued at $200 each. You also get drinks for two at the Strand’s rooftop lounge. Which, by the way, was designed by Hollywood set decorator, Lydia Marks (Sex and the City, The Devil Wears Prada.)

“We strived to create a hotel ambience that reflected The Strand’s neighborhood, New York City’s Fashion District,” says Don Glassie, president of The Strand’s parent company, Atlantic Stars Hotels & Cruises. “These iconic photos will remind guests that they are in the fashion capital of the world—a glamorous place to be.”

Then, when you take your print home, it will remind you that you live in a hovel by comparison. Clever marketing!
