Leaves turning red and gold then falling from the trees. A distinct chill creeping into the air. Shorter days, longer nights. The return of pale, dry skin. There’s nothing like fall to remind you of the passage of time, and your own aging. Cheerful, no? Well, now you can at least maintain your healthy glow well into winter with the Spa at the Four Seasons Aviara’s Fall Ex "Foliation" treatment.

The new treatment started on September 22, to coincide with the first day of autumn. Spa-goers can now get a special 50-minute treatment that includes an exfoliating scrub, a mud mask, and a massage. When guests arrive at the spa, they are greeted with a meditation and hands-on preparation ritual, then given “reflection cards” with thoughts designed to make them think about the meaning of autumn (maybe they’re not as morbid as we are).

Here’s the interesting part: while they are relaxing, guests can choose from a variety of “fall-toned” essential oils like bergamot, cypress and cedar wood…and then hand-mix their own treatment oil! It’s kind of like an episode of Iron Spa.

Then for the treatment itself. First guests are given an exfoliating rosemary scrub to increase circulation and open the pores. Next, they receive a mineral mud back mask with vitamins A, C and E in it to remove toxins and impurities. While all this…cleansing…is taking place, guests are given a quick food and shoulder massage with their custom-blended essential oil mixture.

The 50-minute session goes for $140, but we’d suggest splurging on the two-hour experience in a private suite with its own shower, chaise longues, fireplace and outdoor courtyard whirlpool for an extra $60.

Rates at the hotel, which is about 45 minutes north of San Diego, start at $350 midweek, though if you’d like to stay longer, there are a variety of bargains including a $100 resort credit on stays of two nights or more, and a complimentary third night for every two consecutive paid nights. And as far as we know, the Four Seasons brand is sticking around.
