During a recent stay at the Mondrian South Beach, we were quite taken with the “Sleeping Beauty’s Castle” concept of Dutch designer Marcel Wanders.

After looking back at some of our photos, we wondered if we might be able to recreate the look at home—or at least, parts of it. We’re not too keen on having one of these bug-eyed lady murals staring at us when we wake up every morning.

Design geeks will already be aware of Wanders’ work, particularly with Moooi. (“Mooi” is Dutch for “beautiful.” The extra "o" is for extra beauty. But it’s pronounced “moy.”)

The main Moooi galleries are in The Netherlands, and if the Mondrian SoBe is Sleeping Beauty’s castle, these spaces look like the Seven Dwarves’ workshop.

But for devoted designistas, the work of Wanders and other Moooi designers can be purchased here in the States, at stores like B&B Italia in New York, Propeller in San Francisco, Twentieth in L.A., and Inform Seattle. Moooi is also available at some online retailers, such as All Modern, which is currently selling the Moooi Smoke Dining Chair—the same ones that are at the Mondrian’s concierge desk—for the sale price of $1, 498 each (down from $2,696.40!).

The Moooi Boutique XL sofa in the Jester fabric—very comfortable for an afternoon nap, as we discovered at the Mondrian—is listed over at Stylepark, however you need to send a request to see the price list, which is never an indication of a bargain.

Many of the vases and lighting fixtures available from All Modern’s Moooi boutique resemble what’s in the Mondrian—the Delft Blue ceramics are reminiscent of the tiles in the Mondrian’s guest-room kitchen, for example—but what we really want and have been unable to find as yet is the awesome chandelier shower head.

Perhaps it’s time for a trip to Amsterdam ...

Moooi is no more. ;-X

I'm a big fan of Marcel Wanders stuff!  I even went to the Thanksgiving Eve Party with Mondrian at The Forge (http://www.socialdiva.com/blog/index.php?itemid=1565&catid=1) and the Art Basel Party (http://www.socialdiva.com/blog/index.php?itemid=1596) back in 2007.  But all good things must come to an end.  The store is now empty and there is a for lease sign in the window.

Moooi Miami no more, right?

Thanks for this, Gregg. We realized that the Moooi store in Miami is no longer, however the products are still available at the stores we mentioned above. And of course we can always experience them at the Mondrian!
