Update: The Chatwal has had this website up for a while, as we reported last year, but since the hotel never made its promised opening date of late 2008 we totally forgot about the website. And it looks like there is really nothing new on this site to report on either. Still, we apologize for slacking off and we won't do it again. Or in other words: "Thank you sir! May we have another?"

The Chatwal New York has been on our radar for awhile, but details on the Vikram Chatwal property have been few and far between. The latest we heard, courtesy of the Leading Hotels of the World website, was that the hotel will open in "Spring 2010." But an important milestone in the progress of any hotel opening we're tracking is the debut of a website. And looky here, The Chatwal New York now has one!

Before you get too excited (like we did), keep in mind that there is little real intel to be gleaned from the site at this stage. The landing page says "Coming Soon" (oh-kay), and the rest of the site consists of short blurbs about the hotel and the restaurant headed by chef Geoffrey Zakarian.

We do, however, like the idea of the handcrafted, prohibition-era cocktails and light bites that will be available in the hotel's lobby bar. Here's hoping more photos and tantalizing details hit The Chatwal's new home on the interwebs soon. Or better yet, maybe the hotel will actually open. Now, there's a thought.

I don't understand why hotel chatter is so down on the Chatwal.  Yes, it's delayed, but really tell me what hotel has opened on time without having so many snags when they open and giving bad customer experiences.  If you try to open too soon, then you have trouble, and obviously in your case if you don't open on time, you have trouble.  I would rather see the hotel open properly than now (especially when NY is having problems filling hotel rooms anyway,  isn't it?)  I get special deals all the time from all hotels in NY so they are all hurting aren't they?  I was in NY last week from Europe, and must say, this hotel will be very special.  They are doing a great job of combining old history with new contemporary feel.  the attention to detail is outstanding, and they are going to be a quality property.  I also see it as a great pre & post theatre hang out, with old world style club feel.    There has also been much involvement from their GM and Director of Sales which in turn created some fine tuning of what was going to happen and what will happen now.  Give this property a chance.  They deserve it, and I look forward to seeing it complete after seeing what I saw last week.  It will be worth the wait!

I have to agree with the comment above.  HotelChatter seems to have something of a vendetta against The Chatwal, which is a little unfair considering it hasn't even opened its doors yet.  Are you even judging the book by its cover?  At a time like this, shouldn't HotelChatter be supporting and encouraging companies who are investing money in the city and providing employment for 100's of people.  I, for one, am looking forward to seeing The Chatwal.  As a regular visitor to NYC, I've still yet to find my perfect New York hotel but The Chatwal could be it.  I love designer Thierry Despont's work on the lobbies of Claridge's and The Dorchester so am excited to see his designs for an entire hotel and reckon it will be stunning.  I'm looking forward to enjoying one of those hand-crafted, prohibition cocktails in the hotel bar.  I applaud the hotel's owners for having the courage to delay the opening until it's ready and can deliver the kind of service and experience they are promising.

We're excited for the Chatwal to open

Don't get us wrong, we are excited to see this new hotel. It's just that we've been waiting a long time. We know that good things come to those who wait so we hope that the Chatwal delivers when it opens this Spring.
