Kimpton Hotels to the Eco-Rescue

A selection of Kimpton's eco-friendly products

Cue the swelling superhero theme music. There are comic book heroes and there are eco-warriors, and as of this month, Kimpton Hotels can count themselves in the latter category. For a commitment to sustainability that has spanned 28 years, they've recently been honored with a "World Saver" award by Condé Nast Traveler magazine.

The awards, which were held last night in New York City, are decided upon by a panel of 21 "academics, CEOs, and philanthropists" who recognize companies in the categories of Education, Poverty Alleviation, Wildlife Conservation, Cultural and Environmental Preservation, and Health. This year the panel noted that sustainable travel has been a sweeping trend, which is where Kimpton Group comes into the picture.

Kimpton earned its brownie points for an overall commitment to EarthCare guidelines which promote environmental protection and responsible travel. They recently earned Green Seal Certification for their Chicago Hotels and Hotel Monaco in Portland, and the unveiling of their first LEED-certified location—Philadelphia's Hotel Palomar—will take place on October 15th.

Other "go-green" initiatives, aside from basics like in-room recycling and the use of non-toxic cleaning products, include sustainable seafood selections that are in line with the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch List and 30 percent eco-friendly wine selections at restaurants.

By covering as many socially conscious fronts as possible, it's no wonder they avoided "honor to be nominated" syndrome and went straight to the acceptance podium.
